Walking the Ceredigion Coastal path, West Wales. : Aberaeron to Aberarth return, 3 miles
On Tuesday 27th August 2013 we tackled the 3 mile return section from Aberaeron to Aberarth. Aberaeron is perhaps Ceredigion’s most picturesque town with its Georgian harbour and multi-colour painted houses. This is a short level and easy walk a good way to work up an appetite for lunch. There are various car parks but perhaps the easiest is by the beach to the north of the town. There are no facilities in Aberarth, unless the village hall happens to be open.
The walk starts north of Aberaeron harbour and the Aeron River that flows into it. From the Harbourmaster’s restaurant we set off past the tourist information centre along the promenade north for a few hundred yards past the car park and then on to a level shingle path. Aberaeron’s beach north is all shingle and has lots of rock pools. It is dog friendly all year and our dogs enjoyed chasing the sea gulls.
The wooden posts in the sea said to be the remains of fish traps. We continued along this path past the touring caravan sites and Aberaeron Rugby Club on our left which is well known for its 7’s competition over August bank holiday. The path gradually rises onto low cliffs and from here we were able to see the small village of Aberarth ahead.
Aberarth is a small attractive village; the Arth (bear) river tumbles down through it. It has narrow streets, lovely old cottages a shingle beach and a disused jetty. At one time the Strata Florida monastery had a water mill and fishing rights here. A number of crafts people live and work here including a shoemaker (made to measure) and a love spoon carver. There fine views north of Cardigan Bay, Llanrhystud, Aberystwyth and the Snowdonian mountains beyond. We had a little wander around before setting off back to Aberaeron.
Heading back along the coastal path we enjoyed the views opening up to reveal Aberaeron and then beyond to New Quay
